Canadians finish strong at WS 100

Canada was well represented at this past weekend’s Western States 100 in California. One of the premier ultra races in North America and perhaps the world, the Western States 100 draws an extremely competitive field of runners. This year’s field included the likes of Anton Krupicka, Geoff Roes, Killian Jornet Burgada, Hal Koerner and Erik Skaden on the men’s side and Nikki Kimball, Meghan Arbogast and Annette Bednosky on the women’s side.

Nonetheless Canadian runners were not intimated by the these big names in ultra running. Tracy Garneau from Vernon, BC overcame achilles tendon difficulties in the last 20 miles to win the women’s race in 19:01:55. Given the great field and tough conditions this is an amazing accomplishment for Tracy. Fellow BC resident Gary Robbins was the top male Canadian finisher with a 6th place finish in race that saw the top two finishers break the course record. Congratulations Tracy and Gary and all the rest of the Canadian finishers!
